The October rankings are out and Argentina has returned to the top spot. They last held the #1 position in March of this year. Other movement has England again falling out of the top 10 after climbing to number 9 last month while Mexico took a bit of a slide to 15th. The US holds steady at 18, which is 11 spots hirer then they were last October. However the big news is Russia who pole-vaulted 10 spots to 16th overall.

Since 2000, the US is 9-2-1 against Mexico, outscoring them 18-4 in this decade. Mexico has failed to defeat the US in the United States during this span and the US is 1-0-1 against Mexico in neutral venues since 1980. The US eliminated Mexico from the 2002 World Cup by defeating them 2-0, and the US won the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup by downing Mexico 2-1. So my question is: What do the MNT have to do to get a higher FIFA ranking than Mexico and be the #1 ranked team in CONCACAF?

Beat Brazil and Argentina on a semi-regular basis, like Mexico has.

Exactly. Mexico are 6-2-2 against Brazil in their last 10 games, while the US has beaten them once (1-12-0 all-time), I believe.

Losing 5 in a row this year doesn't help with the ranking either. Had they taken Copa America more seriously this year they'd probably be higher than Mexico. Of course, the MNT's priorities this summer didn't include these rankings, and they shouldn't have. Asserting regional dominance and getting that Confederations Cup berth were more important, even when I think that a stronger roster should have been sent to Venezuela.

Now, if they do well in the Confed Cup and keep getting friendly wins like the one in Switzerland against other European/SouthAm teams (as well as do well in the WC qualifiers...) and they'll definitely top Mexico in the rankings.
